Many of the health and beauty products found in conventional pharmacies and grocery stores contain scores of chemical ingredients that put your health at risk. At Rhea Manor Natural Food Market, we don’t just sell organic and natural food, but also Beauty Products that are Organic and Natural. While we often think about what goes in our body, we don’t often realize what harmful things we are applying on our body. Much research has proven that ingredients in beauty products could cause cancer and even Alzheimer’s Disease, but that doesn't mean all beauty products are harmful.
Different Types of Organic and Natural Products
Although most of us don’t realize it, there is a difference between “natural” and “organic.” We assume that the word natural means that the food or product is processed or handled only a bit and not treated with hormones or chemicals. But that is not true. In America, neither the FDA nor the USDA has any regulations regarding the labeling of “natural” on products. Which allows companies to place a “natural” label on foods that have not been raised naturally at all and have probably been given medication or processed.
The term organic means that no toxic synthetic pesticides or herbicides, chemical fertilizers, and no antibiotics or growth hormones given to the animals. Those that produce organic foods are also subject to rigorous inspections which can be either announced or unannounced to ensure that they are following the stringent rules that organic means. However, it is not just food that is treated with chemicals, some other products that you probably never even considered might be chemically altered or harmful:
Sports Supplements - it seems that sports supplements are everywhere nowadays, and I’m not referring to Lance Armstrong or other professionals who have gotten caught using “doping” mechanisms. You probably know someone who drinks shakes, eats nutrition bars or takes a pill to enhance their performance. These supplements are under the jurisdiction of the FDA; however, they are not required to be safe or effective before they sold. It’s only after the supplements are available for sale and can be proven to be unsafe that the FDA can take action and remove them.
Organic Whey Protein and Flavored Protein Powder – Whey is a byproduct of milk which, obviously, is produced by cows. The “farms” that raised cows today are not the idyllic ones in our heads. Instead, they are places where many animals are kept in close quarters known a CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations.) The conditions that these cows are forced to live in are known to spread disease, and therefore the animals are given antibiotics to prevent diseases both in cows and those that could spread to humans. The condition of certified organic farms is vastly different from the CAFOs, including having rules such as 30% of the cow's diet must come from grass, cows must have access to pasture throughout the growing season, and the using antibiotics and growth hormones are not allowed. Rhea Manor Natural market carries a range of natural whey protein mixes as well as isolate powder. The difference between isolate powder and whey protein concentrate is a matter of personal preference. The main difference is that whey protein isolate has more protein and fewer carbohydrates, lactose, and fat. Isolate powder is also usually more expensive but is useful for people who are lactose intolerant.
Nutrition Bars – strong>Pocket-sized bars are now a popular choice for either a quick snack or even as a meal replacement. Although they appear to be a healthy choice, some of them are not and are not natural or organic at all Rhea Manor Natural Market carries multiple brands and flavors of bars that will fit your needs. Kind Madagascar Van Almond is one of the healthiest bars you can find due to the omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. Kind bars in general, especially those with nuts and spices, are one of the best choices you can make when deciding on a snack bar.
Simply Choices Whey Bars Chocolate Mint and other bars from the “Simply Choices” brand is a good option for a quick snack when you have hit that 3 pm slump or when you have had a bad night’s sleep. For such a small bar, they pack a lot of protein and only around 150 calories into these bars.
Deodorant – many people do not know that there is a difference between antiperspirant and deodorant, and we often use the terms interchangeably just as many deodorants are also antiperspirants and vice versa. However, there is a difference between the two, and it’s a rather large difference. Deodorant is a cosmetic product as it simply masks our body odor. Antiperspirants, on the other hand, work to eliminate the wetness that occurs when you sweat. They contain chemicals that change the function of our skin to stop the sweating that is natural.
Men’s Grooming - let’s be honest, most men don’t know face soap from body soap or that conditioner is even necessary so trying to convince them to use natural products can be a challenge but have them read this, and they may change their mind. Natural Health and Grooming products for men can make you look younger than your age and feel better as well. Natural products are better for the environment and by using natural products the chemicals don’t go into our water supply or the air. Natural products have fewer, or no, chemicals, artificial colors, and fillers which can cause breakouts and redness on your skin. One of those chemicals are parabens which help extend the shelf life of products, yet your body recognizes them as hormones and treats them as such. It causes havoc on your endocrine system and can cause permanent changes to your skin and endocrine system.
